More About Makaio

Makaio Huizar

Makaio Huizar doesn’t write songs to sound impressive — he writes them to survive.

At 18, the Arizona-based singer-songwriter has built a growing audience around music that feels less like performance and more like a late-night conversation. With over 355,000 streams across his catalog — including standout singles “What Am I Waiting For?” and “Town” — Makaio has quietly become one of the most promising young voices in the Bedroom Pop and Folk Pop space.

Born into a family of eight siblings and raised in Oceanside, California, Makaio’s upbringing shaped both his resilience and his writing. Growing up in a tight, financially strained household after his parents’ early divorce, he learned quickly how to observe, reflect, and internalize. Those experiences now live inside his lyrics — raw, detailed, and deeply personal.

His songwriting is often described as mature beyond his years. Each release feels like a chapter pulled directly from his life: confusion about growing up, questions about identity, mental health, love, and feeling out of place. His signature ethereal backing vocals and intimate production create a sound that feels like it was made alone in a bedroom — because most of it was.

What started as a small creative experiment at 15 has evolved into purpose. Makaio makes music to make others feel less alone in their struggles — and that intention is at the center of everything he creates.

With his debut project, What Do You Want To Be When You’re Older? arriving April 24th, Makaio steps into a new era — not just as a promising young artist, but as a storyteller learning to turn his past into something powerful.

What Do You Want To Be When You’re Older?

What Do You Want To Be When You’re Older?

Out April 24

What Do You Want To Be When You’re Older? is a 7-song coming-of-age body of work that documents the fragile transition between boyhood and adulthood. At just 18, Makaio Huizar delivers a bedroom pop project that feels intimate in scale but expansive in emotion — like a late-night drive through memories you’re not sure you’ve healed from.

The EP moves deliberately. “Older” opens with confusion and emotional numbness, questioning whether growing up is supposed to feel this isolating. “Father” and “Town” dig into family tension and internal chaos, reframing home and memory as both sanctuary and scar. The cinematic centerpiece, “Oceanside,” revisits his hometown and fractured brotherhood, grounding the project in vivid, lived-in detail.

From there, the narrative shifts. “Medicine” examines love as an unhealthy cure for old wounds, while “I’ve Never Been Much Of A Liar” takes responsibility for the damage caused by unresolved pain. By the time the EP reaches its atmospheric closer, “Stars,” the question posed in the title is finally answered: despite fear, insecurity, and doubt — he wants to be a star.

This project doesn’t glamorize growing up. It captures it honestly — messy, reflective, and deeply human.

It’s Not Just About Music

Makaio Huizar on Mental Health

Makaio Huizar is more than a musician — he is an activist. A passionate advocate for mental health and human rights, he lives by the message, “advocating for mental health through music.”

In March 2024, Makaio wrote the deeply moving song “16.” The track confronts difficult subjects including depression, eating disorders, loneliness, and thoughts of self-harm. Rather than allowing the song to exist solely as a personal expression, Makaio chose to turn it into a force for good. To date, he has raised and donated over $300 to the Mental Health America Foundation, contributing all earnings from the single “16.” He continues to donate annually during the month of June in ongoing support of mental health initiatives.

What began as one song evolved into a long-term commitment. Makaio has intentionally shaped his platform into a safe and comforting space for those who are struggling. When asked about his purpose in music, he consistently answers, “To make others feel less alone.”

Through the vulnerability in his songwriting and the empathy behind his artistry, Makaio has built meaningful connections with his supporters on multiple levels.

In 2025, Makaio released the one-year anniversary live performance, “16 (Live From My Garage),” on his YouTube channel. Following the performance, an on-screen message encouraged continued advocacy for mental health efforts, especially as funding was reduced for several programs, including the Mental Health America Foundation. Makaio has pledged to continue donating annually and expanding his efforts to support mental health awareness and resources.
